Mark Turansky saved $184.29 and 1147.5 watts!

Savings - $ and kWh

Compact flourescent bulbs use 25% of the energy of old fashioned incandescent bulbs.

Mark Turansky swapped out 1530 watts of incandescent bulbs for just 382.5 watts of CFs, saving 1147.5 watts of electricity!

If those lights are on for just four hours per day... the annual cost is reduced to $61.43 from $245.72, for a total savings of $184.29!

What Mark Turansky has to say

I think tracking all the watts saved by CFs is a cool idea! We swapped out all the 60 watts in our house, and there are several flood lights in our kitchen that we changed. We increased some of the wattages, like in the garage. We went from a dim (for a garage) 60 watt to a bright 150 watt CF. The new CF still uses less watts but we've got a brighter workspace.

Big Picture Math

According the the Energy Information Administration, there are over 107 million households in the U.S with each consuming approximately 940 kWh of electricity annually for lighting. That's over 100 billion kWh!  At an average cost of $0.11 per kWh, we spend over $11 billion annually just on lighting!

If every household in America replaced their incandescent bulbs with CFs, we'd save 75 billion kWh or enough to power another 7.5 million homes. That's a lot of energy.
